February Spotlight: Treat the Family

Treat Your Pets at ….

Petz Kitchen, founded by friends Rachel & Sarah when Sarah’s Mini Schnauzer pup, Eddie, suffered renal failure. Rachel & Sarah started making their own healthy treats for him after a spell at the Vets. Eddie, & Rachel’s Mini Poodle Basil, loved them, as did their friends dogs, so Petz Kitchen was born. The treats are made with human grade, locally sourced ingredients including flax seed for lots of omega 3.

They’ve now launched a range of cat treats, and soon to follow a vegan and vegetarian dog and cat treat selection.

Its estimated that over 196m roses were grown for Valentine’s Day in 2011. A lot of love…

Forget the disappointment you may have had this Valentine’s Day and look forward to Pancake Day! Shrove Tuesday is next week on the 21st February.

Why not take advantage, or perhaps guilt trip your loved one, into buying you some nice fresh new kitchen linen. With a wide range of tea towels, aprons, oven gloves and even aprons for the kids, you can flip pancakes in style and spruce up your kitchen linen accessories in one go.

Our favourite is the Ginger Bread Man Shape Kids Apron for the little ones and the full Tuscany Wine Glass print aprons, tea towels and oven gloves. The kitchen apron has two large pockets and a generous size tie back and neck loop to fit all shapes and sizes in the kitchen.

Traditional Pancakes

Jif Lemon & Sugar
Jif Lemon

To have a traditional pancake day you should make the batter light (here is Delia Smith’s Pancake Recipe), and serve with a squirt of lemon and sprinkling of sugar. To cut the calories you can use cinnamon instead of sugar and we’re all partial to a bit of Jif Lemon at Roman at Home.

The world’s largest pancake in 1994 was 15mtrs long, weighed 3tonnes and was made… in Rochdale. We do like our pancakes in the UK!

At the Cinema…

Take the kids out for a treat this February to see The Muppets. With giggles and gags for both parents and kids, its a great all-round film.

The Muppets, with help from three friends and fans, reunite to try to save their old Muppets theatre from an Oil Tycoon.

Take advantage of Orange Wednesday’s 2 for 1 Film so you have change for popcorn and drinks.

Tip of the Month

Use the left over lemon juice from Pancake day to spruce up your kitchen as its a great cleaning aid! Mixing equal parts lemon juice to water can produce an odour eating cleaner for your kitchen.

1. Adding a teaspoon to your normal dishwasher detergent can help grease cutting.

2. With a wedge of lemon in a microwave safe cup of warm water you can help cut the grease in your microwave easily by heating the cup for a few seconds and the lemon juice will circulate to help cleaning the top of the microwave.

We Love these!

With the cold February air and endless hours watching the kids play in the park, we’re loving the Purple and Navy Heart Print Snood from Dorothy Perkins.

What we’re reading…

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

By Mary Ann Shafter and Annie Barrows
Why we love it: It’s totally different to most books as the story is not written in traditional narrative, but instead is played out through letters and correspondences between the central character, Juliet Ashton, and her new found friends who are part of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The story is set just after the Second World War and gives us an insight into what happened during the occupation on the small island of Guernsey. The book is extremely witty with a captivating cast of characters who quickly draw you into their lives. These are all headed up by an intriguing and charming heroine, who tells the story.
