With our fantastic facebook competition to win a signed Sarah Deane print now well underway, we thought it was about time we found out a bit more about the photographer, who has formed such a central role in our Best of British range.
Sarah Deane is a Newcastle based, award winning photographer, who specialises in Fine Art Prints and Commercial Photography. She set up Sarah Deane photography in March 2011, having previously worked in-house as a studio photographer for over 10 years. Sarah is a highly qualified photographer having studied Art Foundation at Newcastle College and then going on to study Graphic Design at The London Institute Camberwell College.
Sarah was one of the first to contact us when we invited people and companies to put their products forward for our Best of British range. We were quick to invite Sarah in for a chat having seen her eye-catching pieces of photography. Sarah’s dramatic prints really caused a stir with everybody at Roman at Home and we were excited to pick out a range that really represented Britain and the traditional British day out.
Her Seaside prints really encapsulate every part of the British seaside, from the Grannies waiting for the tram, through to getting sand in your sandwiches on the beach, and from the excitement of the penny arcade, to the classic souvenirs and postcards. This collection was a clear winner for the Best of British Range. The seaside range was quickly joined by her collection of fairground prints – in direct contrast to the drizzle of the seaside, these prints managed to capture a fantastically blue sky and all the fun the fair. Both ranges are the perfect way to add some character and personality to your home.
When we chatted to her about her photographs and what inspires her, Sarah commented: “I create compositions out of personal observations in places that interest me. I have captured the images in a variety of natural lighting situations, to create sharp bright contrast, resulting in almost fantastical scenes in the fairground pictures. Many of the seaside shots are in lower light creating a gritty grainy finish. All have had the contrast boosting to make them more punchy, with no other photoshop work.”
When talking about her range of photography available on Roman at Home, Sarah said: “The images were taken for personal projects, not to brief, but for enjoyment. I love taking my camera to places that we may not normally think to take out cameras to, or creating compositions from everyday subjects and colourful environments.”
Sarah doesn’t usually sell her prints online, but was keen to give this a try through Roman at Home. She usually exhibits at Open Studios each year at the Mushroom Works, Quayside, as well as at her own studios in Newcastle.
As well as producing fantastic prints, for sale, Sarah also works on a commission basis and is available, for commercial photography, as a specialist food photographer, for weddings and for portrait photography.
